Nils Wessell (PhD), former president of Tufts University and of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is the author of the article "Run a Business Like a University? You Bet!" published in the July/August 1999 issue of Trusteeship magazine.

Alex Stoesen (MA) reports that he joined a Quaker work team for part of the summer in Ramallah, a Palestinian city in Israel's West Bank. Besides doing maintenance work at an Arab school, he and the group traveled around Israel "visiting holy places and observing Palestinian-Israeli relations." Later in the summer, Stoesen went to Tikal National Park in Guatemala to see the Mayan ruins as well as the cities of Antigua and Guatemala City. He writes that he was recently appointed by the mayor of Greensboro, N.C., to join a committee planning the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins, "one of the opening shots of the civil rights revolution." He is chairman of the subcommittee putting up historical markers.

Leonard Opdycke (MA) has a new book, French Aeroplanes Before the Great War, published by Schiffer Publishing. The book is a catalog of aircraft from the nearly 700 French builders who were in business before the start of World War I.

Paul Brands S (MBA), CEO of American Management Systems, was named Employer of the Year at the June 1999 Simon School commencement. . . . The Lifeworld of Leadership by Thomas Sergiovanni W (PhD) has been published by Jossey-Bass. . . . John Zabriskie (PhD) was named to the board of directors at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc., located in Cambridge, Mass.

David Robinson (Mas) was promoted to the position of senior vice president for SunGard Data Systems, Inc., a computer service and application software company located in Wayne, Pa. Robinson has been with the company since its founding in 1983.

John Caparrelli S (MBA) was promoted to executive vice president at Wilmad/LabGlass, manufacturers of glass and laboratory ware for the scientific community. . . . Julian Rappaport (PhD), professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, received the Seymour B. Sarason Award for his work on the relationships between professional human service programs, people dependent upon them, and community settings such as schools.

Elinda Fishman Kiss (Mas), '83 (PhD) has been appointed visiting professor of finance and economics at Rutgers University. She also was elected president of the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association for Business Economics.

James Chiafery S (MBA) is director of investment relations at Brooks Automation, a supplier of tool and factory automation equipment and software for the semiconductor and flat panel display industries, in Chelmsford, Mass.

Jacqueline Dukes W (Mas), who teaches Cleveland fourth-graders during the school year, spends summer vacations pursuing her interest in global education and cultural anthropology. Last summer she received a grant to spend five weeks in Africa and this summer she spent two weeks in Japan on a fellowship, according to an August feature story on her in the The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer.

Carl Sassano S (MBA), president and chief operating officer at Bausch & Lomb since January, was profiled in the Rochester Business Journal. Sassano and his wife, Barbara, and their two children, ages 12 and 19, live in Rochester.

Samuel Hubbard, Jr., S (MBA) is president and chief operating officer of Genesee Corp. in Rochester. In his current position, he is responsible for the operations of the corporation and its subsidiaries, including the Genesee Brewing Co., Inc., Ontario Foods, Inc., and Genesee Ventures, Inc.

Sharon Castro (Mas) is living in Los Angeles, where she is putting together her first feature film project. She e-mails: "I have three name actors who want to appear in my movie Better Half. Darius Sankey was made a partner in Zone Ventures, a Los Angeles venture capital firm focusing on information technology businesses. . . . Tolga Soyata (MS), chief executive of Rochester-based Soyata Computers, has expanded his company to include a new 30,000-square-foot "superstore," according to a feature on him in an August issue of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
