40TH REUNION
OCTOBER 12-15, 2000

Gail Papish Corning e-mails that she has been awarded a Ph.D. in English from the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) and notes the "fortunate coincidence" of having Joyce Middleton, associate professor of English at Rochester, as an external examiner. Corning writes: "I'm now teaching part time at U.W. and working just as hard as I did while writing my dissertation, which I didn't think was possible!"

David Sweet, chairman of the Ohio Regents' Urban University Program and dean of the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, has been named the new president of Youngstown State University. He takes over his new duties July 1. His wife, Pat, is executive director of the Cleveland League of Women Voters Educational Fund.

Charles Groat (see After Words). . . . Steven Price e-mails with news of two new books that Lyons Press published in 1999: The Quotable Horse Lover, a collection of more than 600 equestrian-related quotations, and The Kids' Book of the American Quarter Horse, a children's guide to owning and riding the world's most popular breed.

David Seligman
Seligman

David Seligman announced plans to step down as vice president and dean of the faculty at Ripon (Wis.) College in order to return to full-time teaching in the department of philosophy. Seligman, who has served as dean for 20 years, will take a year's leave of absence to write, research, and develop courses before becoming a full-time faculty member at Ripon in 2001. . . . Marc Weiss served as lighting designer for the Cleveland Opera's productions of Verdi's La Traviata, and Bizet's The Pearl Fishers in the 1999-2000 season. A feature on his work in the Cleveland Plain Dealer noted that Weiss became interested in theater design and lighting while at the University, when he was asked to draw cartoons for the set of a local production of a Thurber play. Since becoming a professional, Weiss has designed the lighting for 45 Broadway shows, including Cabaret and Othello.

OCTOBER 12-15, 2000

Sheila Blumstein was appointed interim president at Brown University when E. Gordon Gee announced his resignation last winter. Blumstein, who earned her doctorate at Harvard University, is chairwoman of the department of cognitive and linguistic sciences at Brown. She also has served as dean and as interim provost at Brown.

Bruce Bashford writes that his book, Oscar Wilde: The Critic as Humanist, has been published by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press. . . . Harrington Crissey (see '48 and '59 Eastman). . . . Sally Mandel reports that her fifth novel, Out of the Blue, has a March publishing date with Ballantine Books.

Andrew Hageman e-mails that he is the executive vice president at Ilisagvik College in Barrow, Alaska. . . .

Hruby

F. Michael Hruby sends an update: Since being published by the American Management Association, his book, TechnoLeverage: Using the Power of Technology to Outperform the Competition, has been named one of the top 30 best business books of the year by Soundview Executive Book Summaries and has been translated into Japanese and German. Hruby is president of Technology Marketing Group, Inc., located in Acton, Mass. . . . Ernest Rosenberg e-mails that he began a new appointment as president of the Soap and Detergent Association last fall. Long located in New York City, the association's headquarters were scheduled to move to Washington, D.C., in March. Rosenberg had served as vice president for health, environment, and safety in Occidental Petroleum's Washington, D.C., office.

Donald Winter has been named executive vice president and general manager of the Systems and Information Technology Group at TRW, Inc. The aerospace and information technology company is based in Reston, Va.
