Scholars of the
Rochester Round Table
Rochester seems to have discovered the Holy Grail when it comes to attracting interest in medieval studies.
The River Campus is the academic home to a number of prominent scholars specializing in the history, literature, and art of the period, among them historian Richard Kaeuper; religion scholar Emil Homerin; and English professors Russell Peck, Thomas Hahn, and Sara Higley.
This spring, another Rochester medievalist, Alan Lupack, director of the University's Rossell Hope Robbins Library, was elected president of the North American Branch of the International Arthurian Society. An internationally known Arthurian scholar, Lupack is author of a number of books and articles on the mythical king. He is also developer of the Robbins Library's Camelot and Robin Hood Web sites--to be found, respectively, at www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/cphome.stm and www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/rhhome.stm.
According to Kaeuper, there has been a cluster of scholars in medieval studies at Rochester for decades. Adds Lupack: "Medievalists here feel a need for interdisciplinary work. What we do is greatly enhanced by the work that others are doing."
This fall, the local group will have an opportunity to share findings face-to-face with an even wider circle of colleagues when the University hosts an international conference, "Camelot 2000: A Millennial Conference on the Arthurian Legends." The Arthurian confab follows the world's first-ever academic conference on Robin Hood studies, held on campus two years ago.
