Named Chairs

Robert Boyd, professor of optics, became the first M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics. The professorship was established by James Wyant '69 in honor of Givens, professor emeritus, who taught at the University from 1947 to 1977.

Steven Manly, associate professor of physics and astronomy, has been named Mercer Brugler Distinguished Teaching Professor. The position was established in 1979 in honor of Brugler, a former chairman of the Board of Trustees, to recognize crossdisciplinary teaching excellence. Brugler '25 died in 1999.
