Trustees

Robert L. Wells ’39, a longtime executive for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation who was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1974, died August 12, 2005. He was 88.

After graduating from the University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Wells earned a master’s degree from Cal Tech and began a 40-year career with Westinghouse. He held several executive positions with the company as he rose to the rank of vice president of Westinghouse’s European and international divisions.

Elected to the board as an alumni trustee, he was named an honorary trustee in 1980 and a life trustee in 1985. A member of Phi Beta Kappa as a student and a four-year letter winner in track and field who set a University record in the high jump, Wells was inducted into the Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame in 1999.

Faculty

Warren Benson, professor emeritus of composition at the Eastman School, died October 6, 2005. He was 81.

During his 26 years at Eastman, Benson received an Alumni Citation for Excellence and the Kilbourn professorship for distinguished teaching. He also was named University Mentor. He was appointed professor emeritus in 1994.

Benson, who was best known for his song cycles and works for percussion and winds, composed more than 100 works. He received a number of awards for his music, including three National Endowment for the Arts composer commissions; was a founding member of the Percussive Arts Society and was elected to its hall of fame and to the National Band Association Academy of Excellence; and was the author of Creative Projects in Musicianship, poetry, and humorous fiction.

A Warren Benson Archive is in the process of being established at the Sibley Music Library. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Warren and Pat Benson Forum on Creativity at the Eastman School of Music, Office of Development, 26 Gibbs St., Rochester, NY 14604.

J. Newell Stannard, a School of Medicine and Dentistry professor emeritus who developed the world’s first doctoral program in radiation biology at the University, died September 19, 2005. He was 95.

Stannard, who joined the Rochester faculty in 1935, was a faculty member for nearly 40 years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, conducting research in respiration physiology at the National Institutes of Health. After the war, he returned to the University and in 1947 was named assistant director for education at Rochester’s Atomic Energy Project. He published numerous studies and reports on radiation, and was the author of Radioactivity and Health, considered to be a comprehensive account of the health effects of radiation and the people involved in radiation research.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the J. Newell Stannard Graduate Scholarship Fund at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, c/o Jack Kreckel, 590 Mt. Hope Ave., Rochester, NY 14620-8993.
