Sculpted Motion

“The Gathering” by Jonathan Hertzel ’77

Jonathan Hertzel ’77 thinks of his work as trying to capture life on the move, whether that metaphor is found in a tree swaying in the wind or the intertwining strands of DNA. “My work has a spiral sort of motion,” says Hertzel, a Pennsylvania-based sculptor who traces his artistic career to his years at Rochester. “Things turning within themselves and back out again, within and out again.” On display last fall at the Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, his work also was showcased last summer at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where a set of Hertzel’s bronze pieces, titled The Gathering, was on exhibition. His work also has been exhibited at the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Academy.
