Alumna Appointed to Port Authority Leadership

AUTHORITY FIGURE: Susan Bass Levin ’72 has been appointed New Jersey’s top official overseeing operations of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Susan Bass Levin ’72 will help oversee the three major airports, two tunnels, regional seaports, and other operations that make up some of the busiest transportation links in the country. Levin, commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Community Affairs, was named this spring as the state’s top official at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The $5 billion agency operates John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia airports as well as the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the George Washington bridge, the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rapid-transit system, and other links between New York and New Jersey.

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine appointed Levin deputy director. Traditionally, the governor of New Jersey and the governor of New York each appoint two of the top four executives.

Levin served as mayor of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, for 14 years before being appointed community affairs commissioner in 2002.
