HARRIET WASHINGTON ’76 WINS NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD

Harriet Washington ’76 won the National Book Critics Circle award for 2007 in the General Nonfiction category for Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation with African Americans from the Colonial Era to the Present (Random House). The book has also earned honors from Publishers Weekly, the American Library Association Black Caucus, PEN Oakland, and the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights.

JU WIE ’95 (PHD) HONORED FOR RESEARCH

Ju Wie ’95 (PhD) and his research partner, A. J. (Jon) Berrick, have won Singapore’s National Science and Technology Award. The Agency for Science, Technology, and Research presents the annual award for contributions to science and technology in Singapore. Wie and Berrick won for their research into the connections between algebraic topology—the study of geometric objects’ shapes—and the theory of mathematical braids. Wie is an associate professor of mathematics at the National University of Singapore.

ALUMNA’S PRODUCTION COMPANY HONORED FOR PLAY

A theater production company managed by Jane Dubin ’78, ’79 (Mas) won the 2008 GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding New York Theater–Broadway/Off Broadway” for Beebo Brinker Chronicles. The company, Double Play Connections, coproduced the off-Broadway play this spring at 37 Arts in Manhattan. This summer, Double Play Connections will present OPA! a musical set on a Greek island.

LAURIE KOPIN ’92N (MS), ’95N (PMC) WINS NATIONAL NURSING AWARD

Laurie Kopin ’92N (MS), ’95N (Pmc), a senior nurse practitioner and manager for the Medical Center’s cardiac rehabilitation and preventative cardiology program, has received the Terry Thomas Clinical Practice Award from the Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association. She is an associate professor of clinical nursing at the School of Nursing and senior instructor of medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
