1937

John Reed writes that he and Alice Greene Reed ’38 have been married since 1940 and have five grown children: John Shelton Jr., a sociology professor who retired from the University of North Carolina; Lisa, a novelist; and Bill, Michael, and Jane, physicians. John and Alice live near John’s hometown of Kingsport, Tenn., where John practiced as a general surgeon for many years. John retired in 1970, after which he and Alice shared years of travel, skiing, tennis, and golf. Now they stay close to home, enjoying their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

1940

Margaret Gillette Fogg writes that she has published Bless This House, a book about the origin and architecture of her family’s cobblestone house. She has also published transcriptions of her great-aunt’s diaries, her family genealogy, and a book about her memories growing up in Livingston County.

1948

Robert Brent ’53M (MD), ’55M (PhD), ’88 (Honorary) received the 2008 Alfred I. duPont Award for Excellence in Children’s Health Care, which includes a $50,000 cash prize and an original crystal sculpture by Steuben Glass. A worldwide leader in radiation biology, developmental biology, and cancer risks, he also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Medicine and Dentistry last fall.

1951

Marie Waugh Bauer writes that for the past seven years she has volunteered in a mentoring program for grades 2 through 5, and for a decade taught nursing at a community college in Flint, Mich.

1955

Ed Russell was profiled in Central Virginia’s The Daily Progress as one of the “Distinguished Dozen,” 12 unsung heroes in the Charlottesville area honored by the newspaper for their impact on the lives of others. Ed, a retired Campbell’s Soup Co. executive, volunteers for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Central and Western Virginia chapter creating computer databases that assist caregivers.

1957

Bob Mumford writes that an image he took in Ecuador of an Andean Emerald hummingbird was selected as a Highly Honored Winner by Nature’s Best magazine in its 2008 annual photography contest.
