Matthew Huber is a busy man. The cellist has solo and chamber music concerts scheduled over the next several months, ensemble work to practice as part of an early music group, and baroque cello and master classes to teach in South Korea. After that he plans to move to Croatia for about six months to spend time with an elderly cello teacher who has produced many winners of international competitions.

“My calendar is insane at the moment,” he says.

Huber, a double major in cello performance and musical arts, plans to make performing a career. He inherited his brother’s violin at 2 and outgrew it by 5, when he switched to the cello. Specializing in the historical performance practices of the 17th and 18th centuries, he says he came to the Eastman School from his home in Colchester, England, to study with world-renowned professors who invest heavily in each student despite demanding touring schedules of their own.

Already feeling nostalgic for what will soon be his alma mater, Huber advises incoming freshmen not to squander opportunities to learn from the best.

“I wish I were here another year to take all the classes I want to take.”
