Two Rochester graduates were honored in May for scholarly accomplishments. Clifford Kubiak ’80 (PhD) and Barbara Sinclair ’70 (PhD) each received the Rochester Distinguished Scholar Medal during campus ceremonies this spring.

Kubiak, the Harold C. Urey Chair of Chemistry at the University of California at San Diego, is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the chemistry of carbon dioxide. Over 30 years, he has conducted groundbreaking research on the chemistry of energy conversion, catalysis, electron transfer, and molecular nanotechnology. His research on the photochemical “splitting” of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide and oxygen offers the potential for fuel savings and the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Sinclair, the Marvin Hoffenberg Professor of American Politics Emerita at the University of California at Los Angeles, is one of the most highly regarded scholars of American national politics. She is the author of numerous books on Congress, its leadership, and the policy process, including Transformation of the U.S. Senate (1990), which won the Richard F. Fenno Prize, awarded by the American Political Science Association and named for Rochester’s Distinguished University Professor Emeritus. Sinclair is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
