Jump Suit
SPORTS CLOTHES: More than half a century before the women’s rowing team became Rochester’s 23rd varsity sport (see page 22), the dress code for women taking part in physical education was decidedly different. As an example of student life from another era, Barbara (Bobbe) Sykes Walter ’50, of Racine, Wis., donated a three-piece gym suit of the kind worn by women students in the 1940s and 1950s. Now housed in the University Archives, the suit includes a note from Walter: “It was a comfortable outfit indoors or outdoors—modern dance, calisthenics, field hockey, tennis. Whatever.”(Photo: Richard Baker)
