Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) is a national day of remembrance, reflection, and action that aims to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At the University of Rochester, this day holds special significance as it aligns with our institution’s long-standing commitment to learning, service, equity, and community engagement, values that closely mirror Dr. King’s vision of a just and compassionate society. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, transforming the date from a day off into a meaningful opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and community members to work together toward positive change. For the University of Rochester, it is a moment to strengthen our connection with the greater Rochester area and affirm our shared responsibility to build a more equitable future.

Each year, the University of Rochester joins local colleges, community partners, and organizations to participate in MLK Day of Action – King for a Day, which is a collaborative event designed to honor Dr. King’s legacy not only through reflection, but through meaningful acts of service across the Rochester community. For our university, this day offers students the chance to engage directly with local organizations, learn about Rochester’s strengths, challenges, and history, build relationships both on campus and throughout the city, and contribute to initiatives that support equity, justice, and community well-being. Students can also earn Medallion Program credits through their civic engagement and leadership. By participating in King for a Day, they step out beyond the classrooms and lecture halls, to connect their learning to real community needs, thereby having an experience that embodies the University’s ongoing commitment to civic responsibility and social impact.

At the University of Rochester, King for a Day continues this tradition by offering service projects such as:

  • Community clean-ups
  • Food security initiatives
  • Support for local youth programs
  • Neighborhood revitalization efforts
  • Workshops and dialogues centered on justice and equity

These experiences help students see themselves as part of the broader Rochester community and highlight how collective action that is rooted in care and solidarity, can create meaningful change.
