Eastman plans warm welcome

esm_welcome_wknd_2013_clrEastman Welcome Weekend is a new campus tradition that started in 2012 to create community,  build spirit, and allow students to experience Rochester.

Welcome Weekend begins with the school’s annual convocation on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 2:30
p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. Convocation provides the opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to kick off the beginning of the year together. Douglas Lowry, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music, and President Joel Seligman will give a welcome address, and a faculty performance with George Taylor and Nicholas Goluses will conclude the traditional event.

On Friday, Sept. 6, Welcome Weekend celebrations continue with free coffee from the Joe Bean Coffee Roasters bike cart from noon to 4 p.m. in front of the Student Living Center. Dinner in the Eastman Dining Center, from 5 to 7 p.m., will feature a special carnival-themed menu. Students can also watch a “blockbuster” movie on campus at 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, there will be a carnival from noon to 4 p.m. in the Student Living Center courtyard with a henna artist, photo booth, bounce house, make-your-own reed diffusers, and ice cream. Eastman students will also receive their limited edition long-sleeve 2013 Welcome
Weekend shirt.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, students can experience the Clothesline Festival, Rochester’s largest and longest-running arts and crafts festival with all-day live entertainment, food from some of Rochester’s favorite vendors, free art activities, a museum visit, and original artwork throughout the grounds. Tickets for Eastman students are free and available in the Office of Student Life. Tickets are valid on both Saturday and Sunday. Students can ride the free shuttle bus from the East End Garage at East Main and Scio Streets.

Eastman Welcome Weekend is sponsored by the Office of Student Life, Eastman Students’ Association, and Eastman Dining Services. For more information, visit
