Hey, Yellowjackets! Summer is rapidly winding down and I’m excited for you to join me on campus. I’ve been here advocating for students and am looking forward to having you all back! Every year I’m pleasantly surprised to see how new campus feels, and I’m sure this one will be no different.
First of all, we’ll have 1,300 new faces in our midst—welcome to the family, Class of 2018! Jeez. It’s already the Class of 2018. Where did the last three years go? Looking back, I know I spent it on academics that challenged me and diverse experiences that inspired me, though it was my participation in student activities that really taught me what it meant to be a leader. As you return to Rochester in the next few weeks, I hope you’ll keep that in mind. It’s never too late for a new experience and never too early to challenge yourself. So embrace the new and exciting! And that message isn’t just for the freshmen.
Those of you returning to campus will notice some new things as well. Wilson Commons has been spruced up and we have a brand new lounge outside of Starbucks. The old Hive is now Rocky’s Sub Shop and Lounge, with an improved look, more food options, and a whole new feel.
This year, the College will be focusing on inclusion, one of our six communal principles. I encourage you to use this as an opportunity to reflect on your own values and how you’ll bring them to our community. I would also ask you to think about what we lose when we don’t include
all of our peers.
David and I are excited to serve as your SA president and vice president. In addition to continuing popular initiatives from last year like the 5K Challenge and “Lunch with Your Professor,” we want to create a stronger community that empowers students to challenge the status quo. We hope you’ll join us in that goal. As always, you can send us an email, come visit us in Ruth Merrill, speak at the Monday night Senate meetings, or schedule a lunch with us at sa.rochester.edu. Have a great end of the summer and see you soon!
