In a letter published in the December issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, he and colleague Manuel White wrote that their 1968 study (also published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery) showed that a technique they developed to make microscopic punctures in the heart muscle of patients with certain cardiac conditions can be beneficial. In the last few years, medical researchers have been experimenting along the same lines, only using lasers to make the punctures. A follow-up article on the 1968 study was scheduled to be published in the Texas Heart Institute Journal, Hershey notes.
