HOPKINS PROFESSOR APPOINTED IN OPTICS

Fineup

James Fienup, a specialist in imaging technology, has been appointed the Robert E. Hopkins Professor of Optics at the University, effective July 1.

A fellow of the Optical Society of America and of the International Society for Optical Engineering, Fienup most recently was a research scientist at the information analysis company Veridian, where he also was senior scientist for the Electro-Optical/ Infrared Sensing Group.

The professorship is named in honor of Hopkins '45 (PhD), who directed the Institute of Optics from 1954 to 1965, and who is considered one of the institute's most influential figures.
