Service Trips

Rochester students have a long history of undertaking service trips during winter, spring and summer breaks. The destinations range from Rochester to various domestic sites to international projects. Some trips have been in place for many years, allowing students to have a sustained relationship with community partners, and an extended, positive impact. Many of these trips are student led, and in addition to contributing to and learning about local communities, students gain invaluable and transformative leadership experiences.

The Rochester Center for Community Leadership provides advisement and coordination to ensure that service trips are well planned, safe and successful.

Alternative Spring Break Trips 2015

Students Helping Honduras
Location: El Progresso, Honduras

Primary Contacts:

ASB Trip overview:
Because SHH focuses its efforts on a variety of projects within the community, the specific project on which we will be working can vary from day to day. However, the mission of the international organization SHH is to build a movement of young leaders in order to empower orphaned and vulnerable children in Honduras, and each project we work on during an SHH trip will help to fulfill this mission. This will include construction projects on various schools around El Progreso (which is what we worked on during our last service trip) as well as on several children’s homes built by SHH to provide a home for children who lost theirs when the state orphanage burned down last year. Therefore, another large part of our service is to become involved with the children and locals in the community in a way that will empower and inspire them to pursue their education or careers. This will be done by constant immersion in the community, from eating lunch with the children at school to working side by side with local Honduran construction workers. This will not only show the locals our support first hand, but it will also provide our own members with inspiration to do further service by allowing them to see the direct impact of their efforts on the Honduran community.

Catholic Newman Community
Location: Baltimore, MD

ASB Trip Overview:
Our main purpose of this trip is to learn about social justice. Thus, in order to have more deep appreciation for this we must seek out those who are in need of our volunteering services. One place we will be volunteering will be Paul's Place. Paul's Place is a soup kitchen and clothing center serving the greater Baltimore area. We have volunteered at Paul's Place for many years and will be assisting where they need us to which includes, but not limited to, preparing/serving food, and the clothing center.  We will also be assisting at Holy Angels Catholic School. Newman has a long history with Holy Angels. Our duties there include: classroom assistance and tutoring students in a variety of subjects they may need help in.

Habitat for Humanity

The exact details of what we will be doing at the home build are not known, but range from setting up house framework, installing doors/windows, installing drywall, and painting - standard house-building activities. We will not be doing any plumbing or electrical work.
