Community Connections

At the University of Rochester we encourage our students to view their community as a place to have fun as well as a place to learn. Our students have a variety of on and off campus social and cultural opportunities to explore. Rochester's over 200 student organizations provide students with a nearly unlimited number of events, performances, presentations, and service activities in which to participate and attend. The city's offering of numerous museums, theatres, and entertainment venues also serve to enrich student's connection to the community, providing them with new interesting, fun, and thought-provoking experiences.

Common Connection

The Common Connection, a campus concierge and travel service for students, faculty, and staff, is available to assist individuals and groups interested in exploring Rochester's sights, sounds, and flavors. Stop by to learn about on campus events or get a suggestion for a great place to tango, where to find the work of area artists, or ideas for a special evening out on the town. The Common Connection is also the place to go for information on the various transportation options that connect the River Campus and Rochester community.

Rochester Every Day

The Rochester Every Day (RED) program, launched in October 2003, is a discount program available to undergraduates in the College and Eastman School of Music. With a RED sticker on their ID card students receive economic incentives at over 150 participating local stores, shops, and restaurants while exploring local neighborhoods and the city at large. Many RED businesses are conveniently located along the free bus lines that serve campus. Student feedback and suggestions are important to the expansion and enhancement of the RED program, ensuring a wider variety of establishments participate.

Wilson Commons Wednesdays

Wilson Commons Wednesdays, a monthly social program in the main lounge of Wilson Commons, has begun its third successful year of building campus spirit and community. Coordinated by Wilson Commons Student Activities, this lunchtime program is open to the entire campus as well as guests and visitors. Each month's theme is reflected in the lunch menu, live music, and décor. Area businesses, attractions, and neighborhood associations are invited to participate by sharing information about their events and services and often provide samples or raffle prizes. Regularly attracting over 400 people from all areas of campus this program continues to grow. Questions about the Wilson Commons Wednesdays program can be directed to Laura Ballou.
