Your Guide to Voting

Registration Basics

Registering to vote is one of the most important and exciting things you can do to impact the direction of our country. Unfortunately, it can be a confusing process and each county across the country has different paperwork and rules. RCCL is here to help and we'll do our best to walk you through the process. Check out the information below and if you have any further questions, please stop in to see us or email community.leadership@rochester.edu

The first step is to check your voter registration status.

Where should I register?

As a UR student, you can register to vote using your UR campus address, or your family's home address. If you've already registered at home, you're welcome to re-register here in Monroe County with your UR address. You can always update your registration if you move. The decision about where to register is completely up to you and there are several factors that you may wish to take into consideration:

  • How will local politicians impact the lives of Rochester students?
  • Is your home state a swing state? If so, you may wish to register there
  • Would you prefer to vote in person on Election Day?
  • Would you prefer to apply for an absentee ballot and mail it back to your home county?
  • Are there closely contested races back home that you feel strongly about?

How do I register or update my address?

If you wish to register in Monroe County with your UR address (whether you're registering for the first time ever or updating your address), come to the Rochester Center for Community Leadership office and we'll give you a New York State Voter form. It will take about 2 minutes to complete. We can answer any questions you might have and will mail it out for you.

If you wish to register in your family's home county, complete this short form, print it out, finish any other necessary fields, and bring it to the Rochester Center for Community Leadership. We're happy to mail it out for you and answer any questions.

How do I vote absentee?

If you are registered outside of Monroe County (or in any location that you can't physically get to on election day), you'll need to request an absentee ballot. Complete the form, print it out, finish any other necessary fields and bring it to the Rochester Center for Community Leadership. We're happy to mail it out and answer any questions.

An absentee ballot will be mailed to you (make sure to include your full UR mailing address when you fill out your application). You must complete it and mail it back to your local county board of elections. Bring it to the RCCL office and we'll be happy to mail it out for you.

I'm registered locally. Where do I vote on election day?
