Message from the Director—August 2024
Welcome (Back)! 2024-25
Preparing for a Year of Growth, Learning, and Discovery
From: Dr. Miguel Baique, Director of the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity
As the academic year dawns, I am filled with excitement and hope as I and everyone here at the Kearns Center welcome you—our first-year students joining our community (throughout the educational pipeline, from pre-college to graduate education) and our returning students. Each of you brings unique stories, aspirations, and potential to the University of Rochester, and we at the David T. Kearns Center are here to support you every step of the way.
The year ahead will be one of growth, learning, and discovery. There will be moments of triumph and, undoubtedly, challenges. But know this: you are never alone. The Kearns Center is more than just a resource; we are a community that believes in your success and is dedicated to empowering you to reach your fullest potential. Through academic coaching, teaching courses, and organizing impactful programs and events, we are intentional and thoughtful in fostering your engagement. Our efforts are designed with a clear purpose: to support your growth and development, empower your success, and enhance your opportunities for social mobility. We are committed to creating an environment where you can thrive academically, personally, and professionally, ensuring that every step you take brings you closer to your goals.
Introducing Our New Staff
We are thrilled to introduce new members to our Kearns Center team, whose passion and expertise will significantly enhance your experience and contribute to our shared mission. With their fresh perspectives and dedicated support, these new staff members will play a vital role in strengthening our ability to empower you academically, foster your personal growth, and help you achieve your fullest potential, further advancing the Kearns Center's commitment of transforming lives through educational opportunity.
Jessica McCane, Academic Coach for the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program, is here to guide you through your academic journey, offering personalized support and strategies for success.
Claude Poux, Kearns Scholars Program Manager, will be working closely with our Kearns scholars, ensuring you have the resources and guidance needed to excel.
Yarleny Andeliz, Academic Coach for the Kearns Scholars Program, is ready to assist you in navigating the complexities of your academic life with confidence.
Lindsey Fronk, Academic Coach for the TRIO Educational Talent Search Program, brings her expertise to help you (our pre-college students) prepare for and thrive in your educational pursuits.
Charles Howe, our new Department Coordinator, is committed to ensuring that our operations run smoothly so that you receive the best possible support.
Please join me in welcoming them to our community.
Sense of Belonging and Your Success
Your sense of belonging is crucial, so embrace the community by connecting with peers, engaging with faculty, and participating in campus activities—the relationships you build here will become your support network. When self-doubt creeps in, remember that you belong here; each of you was chosen because of your unique talents and potential, so believe in yourself as we believe in you. If you find yourself struggling, whether academically, mentally, or in planning your future, seek help. The Kearns Center and the university provide numerous resources, and asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Challenges, both expected and unexpected, will arise, but they are not roadblocks; instead, they are opportunities to grow stronger and more resilient. Face them with courage, knowing that you have the support to overcome them.
I leave you with a line from a poem that has empowered me for many years—‘Be Strong’ by Maltbie Davenport Babcock: “Be strong! We are not here to play, to dream, to drift; We have hard work to do, and loads to lift.” Remember, you too must be strong. The road ahead may be demanding, but it is also filled with possibility and promise.
Together, we will make this year one of growth, learning and discovery.
With heartfelt support,
Dr. Miguel Baique
