Message from the Director—September 2024
Celebrating Community!
From: Dr. Miguel Baique, Director of the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity
Dear Kearns Family,
As we settle into the academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of community. As you navigate your way through various educational settings – from middle school to graduate school – you will experience immense growth, discovery, and challenge, and the relationships you build along the way will be integral to your success. Developing and leaning into your community is not just about finding support; it’s about enriching your experience, expanding your perspective, and empowering yourself to reach new heights. When you take the time to engage with others, share your experiences, and learn from diverse viewpoints, you become part of something larger than yourself. Community fosters collaboration, inspires creativity, and reminds us that we are not alone in our endeavors. The bonds you create with your peers, mentors, and faculty will provide encouragement during difficult times and celebrate with you in moments of success.
At the David T. Kearns Center, we strive to be a community you can always lean on. Whether it’s through our academic support programs, mentorship opportunities, or leadership development initiatives, the Kearns Center is here to help you thrive. We believe in fostering an environment where students from all backgrounds feel seen, heard, and empowered to excel both academically and personally. By joining and contributing to the Kearns Center community, you are investing in your growth and the collective success of those around you. The connections you build here will open doors to new opportunities, lifelong friendships, and a deeper understanding of the world. As you move forward in your academic journey, remember that you have the strength of this community behind you.
Later this month, we will celebrate and embrace community during Meliora Weekend, September 26th through the 29th. Meliora Weekend is a cherished tradition at the University of Rochester and serves as a reminder of our collective commitment to the values of "Ever Better," fostering a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and community The Kearns Center is so excited to host an event this year and connect with our students, staff, alumni, and faculty. We warmly invite you to join us for The Kearns Center Open House: Embracing Community event, a delightful gathering where we come together to celebrate our shared experiences, reconnect with old friends, and make new connections. This event is an opportunity to strengthen the bonds that unite us as an extended Kearns family. Please join us on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. at the Kearns Center, where light refreshments will be provided. At 4:15 p.m., we will share a short presentation highlighting updates and exciting developments within the Center.
As always, the Kearns Center remains dedicated to supporting you throughout your academic and professional journey. We are here to provide guidance, support connections, and help you navigate any challenges you may encounter. We look forward to seeing you at the Open House, throughout Meliora Weekend events, and through other engagement opportunities throughout the academic year. Let’s come together to celebrate all that we have accomplished and continue striving for all that is possible.
With heartfelt support,
Dr. Miguel Baique
