DR. MICHAEL J. JARVIS
Professor of Early America, Atlantic, and Digital History, & Archaeology
Join Dr. Michael Jarvis for a deep dive into the "wet" side of the American Revolution. While Washington’s army fought on land, privateers waged war at sea, inflicting damage on British supply lines and securing vital supplies for the rebels. This talk explores their impact, Boston’s role in maritime warfare, and the international networks that helped sustain the fight for independence—all in connection with the 250th anniversary of the Revolution.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Michael Jarvis is a Professor of Early America, Atlantic, and Digital History, as well as an archaeologist specializing in Bermuda and Ghana. His research focuses on the first century of British colonial expansion and the American Revolution within Atlantic and transnational contexts. Since 2010, he has led the NEH-funded Smith’s Island Archaeology Project, training more than fifty University of Rochester students in archival research and excavation methods.
A dedicated public historian, Jarvis extends his expertise beyond academia, contributing to documentary films, museum exhibits, curated heritage travel, digital archives, and historical video game experiences that integrate 3D drone and scanner-based digital modeling. At heart, he is a maritime historian drawn to the untold stories of sailors who shaped colonial and imperial networks—an interest sparked by his research on Bermuda and his early experience teaching aboard a schooner in a semester-at-sea program.
