As snow arrives and daylight hours shorten, Transportation and Logistics and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) offer tips to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to stay safe on and around campus.
Drivers
- Clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors, and lights before driving
- Use headlights during the day
- Brake gently on slippery roads
- Slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and park clear of the curb or sidewalk
- Watch for pedestrians and cyclists in low visibility conditions
- For safe parking in University lots and garages, remember to lock your car and be aware of your surroundings. All parking areas, including the East End garage downtown are regularly patrolled. Contact Public Safety at (585) 275-3333 with any security concerns. Parkers at the Saunders Center for Orthopaedics and Physical Performance should call 911 for assistance.
For Pedestrians
- Wear sturdy footwear with textured soles
- Stay alert and keep phones away while walking
- Take your time and walk slowly
- Avoid areas that look icy
- Use handrails on stairs
- Call the snow removal hotline at (585) 275-0000 to report hazardous conditions

- Ride slowly, brake early, and stay alert for icy patches and vehicles with reduced stopping ability
