AI Horizons Institute Planning Grant

Text Over Background Image
This website has been created to document the deliverables and activities undertaken as part of the planning grant awarded by the UR Provost Office in May 2024 to develop a proposal for a new university-wide Transdisciplinary Institute around artificial intelligence.

Vision for the AI Horizons Institute

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly moving from being narrowly applied to specific tasks (e.g., image recognition) and towards generalist agents (e.g., ChatGPT) with a wide variety of applications. The proposed AI Horizons Institute will engage synergistically in both foundational and use-inspired research at the cutting-edge of the AI field, with an initial focus on Generative AI (GenAI), while also serving as a resource university-wide to ensure that our educational programs prepare students for a workplace and society where AI is increasing used and to promote AI literacy for all UR constituencies.

White Papers

We have begun to articulate research agendas for the following areas:

  1. Neuro- & Developmental-Inspired GenAI
  2. Ethical & Societal Implications of AI
  3. AI for Healthcare
  4. AI for Education

Learning Series

These 1-hour Zoom sessions are designed to facilitate transdisciplinary work around GenAI by sharing key relevant concepts and theories within specific disciplines. Recordings of the first 8 sessions as well as forthcoming events are posted here.

Projects

We are compiling an inventory of GenAI-related projects across the UR, to serve as foundations as well as to facilitate connections among researchers for future work.
We invite everyone to add to the current list.

People

Over xx faculty, staff, and doctoral students have participated in this planning grant so far. Get to know them by reading about the interests and experiences with GenAI each shared in their online introductions.

Potential for external funding

Research and development related to AI have become a funding priority for many federal agencies as well as some foundations. As a resource for UR researchers looking for external funding, we are compiling a list of agencies and programs funding AI-related projects – please consider contributing to this ever-growing list.
