Declaring a Major in the School of Arts & Sciences

  1. Review the information online at the department's website for the major or minor you are considering. Many departments require students to meet with a faculty member or departmental advisor prior to approving the major declaration.
  2. During your meeting with the academic department, you will review the courses required to complete the major, including how the upper level writing requirement will be fulfilled.
    1. If you intend to declare a second major or minor, you should also discuss the relevant policies regarding the overlap rules.
    2. If you intend to complete a dual degree program (e.g., a bachelor of arts (BA) and a bachelor of science (BS) degree, two BS degrees, or a dual degree with the Eastman School of Music), you should be aware that the requirements for both degrees must be fulfilled.
  3. You will also complete the required information about the primary writing requirement and the completion of your remaining degree requirements.
  4. Degree requirements and academic policies can be complex. Students with questions should consult with an advisor in the College Center for Advising Services if they have any questions about majors, minors, clusters, and other degree requirements.
  5. Complete and submit the online major/minor declaration form.
  6. Check your email to confirm that the form was received and approved.
