Creating a Link

When you add a link to your web page, it could be a link to another page or file within your site (internal), a link to a page in another website (external), or a clickable email address. You can also create an anchor link to a specific point on a page.


Adding an internal link to another page or file (.pdf, .doc) within your website:

  1. Select a page
  2. Click the Pencil icon to edit the page
  3. Click in the WYSIWYG field and type the text for the link
  4. Select the text with your mouse
  5. Click the "Insert/Edit Link" tool in the toolbar [ link icon ] and click on "Internal" in the dialog box
  6. Click the "Choose File, Page, or Link" button to find the page or file
  7. The links at the top of the dialog allow you to choose Recent for assets that you have recently selected, Browse to select any page or file in your site, or Upload to upload a file to the WCMS from your computer
  8. Make your selection and then click Choose
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Save & Preview and then Submit

Adding an external link to a web page not in your website:

  1. Select a page
  2. Click the Pencil icon to edit the page
  3. Click in the WYSIWYG field and type the text for the link
  4. Select the text with your mouse
  5. Click the "Insert/Edit Link" tool in the toolbar [ link icon ] and click on "External" in the dialog box
  6. Type or copy/paste the link in the field labeled "Link" (be sure to use https not http)
  7. Click OK
  8. Click Save & Preview and then Submit

Some examples of external links:

  • https://www.futurity.org/ (link to a website other than yours)
  • mailto:hajim@rochester.edu (link to an email address)

Creating a clickable email address:

  1. Select a page
  2. Click the Pencil icon to edit the page
  3. Click in the WYSIWYG field and type the text for the link
  4. Select the text with your mouse
  5. Click the "Insert/Edit Link" tool in the toolbar [ link icon ] and click on "External" in the dialog box
  6. Type the words mailto: followed by the email address in the field labeled "Link" (for example, mailto:hajim@rochester.edu)
  7. Click OK
  8. Click Save & Preview and then Submit

Tip: If you type and email address and continue typing the system will automatically make it clickable.

Creating an anchor link:

  1. Select a page
  2. Click the Pencil icon to edit the page
  3. In the WYSIWYG field, place your cursor before the text where you would like your anchor
  4. Click the "Anchor" tool in the toolbar [ anchor icon ] and type a name in the "id" field (The id should be one word and lowercase, if you use more than one word use a dash in place of the space between the words.)
  5. Click OK
  6. Select the text where you would like your anchor to be linked from
  7. Click the "Insert/Edit Link" tool in the toolbar and click on "Internal" in the dialog box
  8. In the field labeled "Anchor" type your anchor name
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Save & Preview and then Submit
