Conversations on Academic Leadership

A year-long forum for information and exchange among University leaders, designed to assist faculty who are newly appointed to administrative positions in acclimating to their roles. Over the course of the year, we will explore common opportunities and challenges of academic leadership such as managing faculty and staff, understanding the University’s budgetary structure and a chair’s fiduciary responsibility, government relations and seeking external support. In addition to being informative, these conversations are intended to assist new leaders in networking with a community of colleagues in leadership roles.

  • September 25, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

    215 LeChase Hall, Warner School of Education, River Campus

    The Office of Counsel will be presenting “Top Eight Tips for Academic Leaders from a University Lawyer.” The aim of this session is to provide newly appointed academic leaders with legal tips and strategies when faced with certain employee-related issues that might present legal risks or implications. Additional insight from a panel of experienced academic leaders will follow.

  • October 23, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

    215 LeChase Hall, Warner School of Education, River Campu., River Campus

    This session is designed to aid academic leaders in creating safe and supportive environments for both students and staff. while underscoring the importance of the Policies Against Discrimination and Harassment (“PADH”) reporting, the investigative process, alternative resolutions, confidentiality, and anonymity, along with an overview of Title IX.

  • November 20, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

    The session provides an overview of the University's financial composition and organization, outlines the financial responsibilities and expectations for effective stewardship, identifies key groups and contacts for financial support and training, and offers an overview of the audit policies and advisory services.

    The discussion is focused on sharing practical tactics for engaging and strategically positioning your department's work with government officials, the media, and the general public.

    This workshop is designed to offer an overview of university advancement, while also underscoring the significance of the academic leader's engagement in philanthropy.
