Submission: A dildo I want to use is made from TPR but the material is “PU (polyurethane) coated plastic.” Does this mean the dildo is not porous and is now safe to use?

Great question! The material TPR is porous, which makes absorb germs easier even with washing it. This means that with a toy made of just TPR, it is best to use a condom with the toy to help eliminate any risk of infection.

However, you mention that the dildo you are interested in is coated in polyurethane, which is a hypoallergenic material that does not promote the growth of bacteria. Because of this, the dildo should not be porous and should be safe to use. I would still recommend reading through the information that comes with the toy to read any safety tips or information about the materials used.

Lastly, be sure you are properly sanitizing your sex toys. Keeping your sex toys clean is important for the health of you and anyone you may be using your toys with. Bacteria can grow on unsanitized toys and lead to vaginal and anal infections. Similarly, STIs can spread via toys if they are used with someone else and not cleaned between users. You should clean toys before and directly after each use. Clean them according to instructions, but generally you will hand wash with a mild soap.
