Frequently Asked Questions: Upcoming Changes to the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
Why is this change happening?
- The self-funded student insurance plan was originally created to provide cost savings for the University. However, the anticipated savings were not realized, and the model introduced increased administrative burden and financial risk.
- While the self-funded model offered advantages, such as internal control to design a plan with rich benefits, the transition to a fully funded plan will allow us to maintain these benefits while improving efficiency and service.
- This change ensures we can continue offering an outstanding Platinum level plan with comprehensive benefits, excellent customer service, and allows University Health Service (UHS) to focus on its core mission of providing exceptional primary care to students.
Who will be impacted?
- Approximately 4,200 students who choose to enroll in SHIP will be impacted. This includes full-time undergraduate, graduate, and health professions students.
What will change?
- Students enrolled in the new plan will not experience any changes to benefits, provider networks, co-pays, or other out-of-pocket expenses.
- Gender-affirming care and reproductive endocrinology services will continue to be covered under the new plan.
How much will this cost?
- Premiums are expected to increase by approximately 13%.
- This increase is significantly lower than the national trend of 30% premium increases this year.
How will students be notified?
- Students currently enrolled in SHIP will be notified of the change through UHS Connect.
- Additional communications will be sent to prospective and incoming students to ensure they are informed.
When will this change take place?
- The current SHIP program will end on July 31, 2026.
- The new Aetna Student Health plan will take effect on August 1, 2026.
What do I need to do?
- Students currently enrolled in SHIP do not need to take any action at this time.
- During open enrollment (dates to be announced), students can choose to enroll in the new Aetna Student Health plan or waive this coverage with your own university approved health insurance plan.
What if I have questions?
