Pregnancy Testing

University Health Service (UHS) Primary Care provides pregnancy testing in the office and take-home pregnancy tests for purchase. You can schedule an appointment at UHS Primary Care for a pregnancy test. You will be asked to provide a urine sample which is then tested to detect pregnancy hormones. These hormones are typically released into the urine during pregnancy approximately ten days after unprotected sex. If you test too early, say a day or two after unprotected sex, the pregnancy test may not be accurate. However, this would be an ideal time to consider emergency contraception if pregnancy is not desired. After you provide the urine sample, the test will be read within approximately five minutes, and you will receive the result at your appointment.
Your provider may ask you questions about your recent menstrual period, recent sexual activity and partners, any methods of birth control used, your current medications, and your medical history. They may also discuss your reproductive goals with you and the following steps to take, regardless of your test result.
The Mandatory Health Fee covers the office visit for a pregnancy test. The cost for the test itself is covered by the UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna). We will submit a bill to your insurance company if this plan does not cover you. Please contact your insurance company directly about coverage details. You are responsible for any part of the bill not covered by your health insurance. See the section below on Confidential Billing for more information about that option.
Take-home pregnancy tests can also be purchased at UHS Primary Care. No appointment is needed. You may simply request a pregnancy test at the check-in window. The test costs $5.00 and can be paid with cash or a credit card. You will need to provide your name and date of birth. If your take-home test is positive, we encourage you to make an appointment with your Primary Care Provider so they can help you navigate whatever next steps you’d like to take.
