How to Declare a Double Major or Double Degree

Double MAJOR refers to majoring in two areas, both of which are part of the same B.A. degree. Double DEGREE refers to majoring in two areas leading to two separate degrees such as a B.A. and a B.S., or some other combination of Bachelor's degrees. (Because of the liberal arts nature of the degree, two B.A. degrees are never awarded.)

When pursuing a double major (two areas, both of which are part of a B.A. degree):

Note that you may declare a second major (as well as minors and certificates) through the fall of your senior year.

1. First, follow the steps for declaring and gaining acceptance into one major. You will meet with an authorized faculty member in the first department and complete a blue concentration form in full. Submit the form to the Academic Services Counter, Lattimore 312.

2. When you are ready to add a second major, meet with an authorized faculty member in the second department and complete a second blue form in full, including the upper level writing requirement of the second major. Revise part C if necessary.

3. Make sure the authorized faculty advisers from both departments are aware of your plans. Each adviser should approve the double major on the second blue form.

4. Submit the second blue form to the Academic Services Counter, Lattimore 312.

When pursuing a double degree (two separate degrees such as a B.A. and a B.S.):

1. First, follow the steps for declaring one major/degree. You will meet with an authorized faculty member in the first department and complete a blue concentration form in full.

2. When you are ready to add a second major/degree, meet with an authorized faculty member in the second department and complete a second blue form in full.

3. Petition the Administrative Committee. Petition forms are available at the Academic Services Counter, Lattimore 312.

4. Submit both blue forms with your petition to the Academic Services Counter, Lattimore 312 (one blue form if previous major/degree is already approved). The Administrative Committee will notify you of the results of your petition.
