News from UHS (Updated 5/8/12)

Significant Changes to Health Insurance for 2012-2013
Significant changes are being made in the health insurance requirements for full-time students for the 2012-2013 academic year. See "Important Health Insurance Information," a letter to all full-time students from the Director of UHS. Details about the changes are being communicated to students in multiple ways throughout the spring 2012 semester. The changes include: (1) Dates: The coverage year will be August 1-July 31. The online Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Process must be completed by September 1 (or within 30 days of acceptance to the University). (2) University Criteria: University criteria for waivers will be stricter to assure students have adequate insurance coverage. (3) Waivers: All requests for waivers from U.S. insurance companies will be audited to assure compliance with University criteria. (4) International-based insurance plans: These plans generally do not meet University criteria for waiver. Students on such plans must enroll in the University-sponsored plan if their plan does not meet University criteria. Students who believe their insurance meets University criteria for health insurance may submit a written appeal by August 15. For more information…

Online Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Process
The link to the online Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Process for 2012-2013 will be open by the end of May 2012. All full-time students must complete this online insurance process for the 2012-2013 year.

Insurance for Students Beginning Full-time Before August 2012
Students who are beginning their full-time studies before August 2012 (i.e., programs beginning in May, June, July, or August 1) need to complete the appropriate form to enroll or waive the University-sponsored insurance for the period of time from the start of their program through July 31. These students must also complete the online insurance process for August 1 through July 31, 2013. For more information...

Summer Hours at UHS
The University Health Service is on its summer hour schedule from Monday, May 14 through Friday, August 24. During the summer, the UHS River Campus Office is open weekdays; the office is closed evenings and weekends. The UHS Eastman School Office is closed for the summer. The hours for the UHS Medical Center Office do not change during the summer. When UHS offices are closed, a UHS physician is available by phone for urgent situations that cannot wait until the offices re-open.

Health Insurance for Graduating Students
Graduating students should check their health insurance status to assure continuing coverage and access to health care following graduation. All graduating full time students who have paid the mandatory health fee can continue to receive primary care services at UHS through August 31, 2012. Graduating full time students who are covered by the University-sponsored Aetna Student Health insurance are covered through August 31, 2012. Graduating students who have been covered by other insurance plans should check with their insurance company to determine whether coverage ends at graduation and if so, what options are available to them. Due to changes in the health care reform law, many young adults will be eligible to remain on their parent's health insurance plan until their 26th birthday if the policy covers dependent children.
