Career Path Modernization Project Advances Onward

The Career Path Modernization (CPM) project has made significant progress over the last several months, and will advance toward implementation in January 2024. Throughout the remainder of 2023, the Compensation team will continue reviewing the more than 5,500 job classification validation forms submitted in MyPath, mapping jobs to the new job structure, then refining and applying pay ranges as well as a job titling framework.

To ensure that there is a thoughtful, holistic review, we will use a cascading approach to validation of where jobs align within the new structure.

  • This spring, Compensation will revisit alignment of roles within the new job structure with workshop participants that were instrumental in helping us refine the original structure proposal.
  • Beginning in early fall 2023, department designees and managers will have an opportunity to review the alignment outcome of jobs against the new job structure.
  • Then, in January 2024, with the implementation of CPM, we will provide staff across the University with their own job-specific alignment information.

What Staff Can Expect Between Now and January 2024

  • Monthly updates and information on the CPM website will help keep staff informed and up-to-date on milestones that have been achieved.
  • University online Community Forums will be held in June to provide a comprehensive project timeline overview, as well as an opportunity to ask questions. These will be answered in the forums as well as collected for new CPM website FAQs.
  • Transparency of pay ranges has been a critical planned element of CPM. In light of a recent New York State legislation change requiring pay ranges on job postings by September 17, 2023, we will publish pay ranges on job postings beginning in early September, in advance of the completion and implementation of CPM in January.
  • It is important to understand that all jobs will not be mapped to the newly-created CPM job structure by New York State’s September job posting requirement deadline. This means that what is published in September on job postings may change for some roles in January when all mapping is completed and the new CPM structure is rolled out in full.
  • The intent of the CPM project is to put in place a transparent job structure that clearly defines jobs at the University, supports staff career planning, and enables better external market analysis. The way we manage pay changes will not be impacted by CPM. Changes will continue to occur as they do today, in collaboration with departmental leadership based on market position, need, and affordability.
