Are there clear paths toward career advancement at the University?

Yes. The University’s job catalog encourages staff to explore the many diverse roles and potential career paths available for staff. The job catalog includes a generic job description for each job classification. Staff members who want to explore potential career paths may take advantage of resources like self-led career planning and MyPath courses to build skills and track progress. Staff can also view and apply for current job openings in myURHR.

Can the job structure help me design my career path?

Understanding how a job fits within the job structure helps staff with career planning and identifying paths to advancement. The job structure provides transparency into roles and pay ranges, organizing jobs by career stream, level, and job family to help staff align their goals with University opportunities. Additional resources include the job catalog, which outlines the job description for each staff job classification, along with training such as self-led career planning and MyPath courses for skill development and tracking progress.

How are job levels determined?

Five factors determine job levels: organizational impact, communication and influence, innovation and complexity, leadership and talent management, and knowledge and experience. Specific guidelines for each factor determine job level and ensure consistency across the organization. Individual performance does not impact an established job level.

How can I progress in my career when my area does not provide opportunities for advancement?

Not all departments need multiple levels in the same job function. Staff members who are looking to advance within the organization may explore potential career paths and areas of interest through the job catalog and other resources.
