What does a (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician do?

A (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician performs a variety of tests and collects data on patients in order to diagnose the extent of sleep disorders. They are responsible for giving patients explanations of the impending sleep tests and procedures, preparing equipment, and recording activities. Minimum education and experience

Associate Degree in Polysomnography Technology. Must take RPGST Boards within six months. Must have NYS Registration within one year of hire; experience in the healthcare-related field preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Intermediate-level of computer skills required. A (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician works under minimal supervision; hence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are important. Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with patients and co-workers.

Days/hours

A (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician monitors patients while they sleep. Typical hours are overnight shifts and include weekends. Standard shift hours are three days per week and 12 hours per day.

A Sleep (Polysomnographic) Technician spends most of their time working in a sleep clinic under the supervision of a Polysomnographic Technologist or Doctor.

Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
