Self-led Career Navigation: MyCareer Plan
Career planning is the process of discovering educational, training, and professional opportunities that suit your interests, passions, and goals. The specialized career plans are designed to help you find your career pathway by offering tools to align your skills with your interests by completing self-assessments. There are also worksheets to assist you with setting goals and determining what motivates you, along with tips on interviewing, resume and cover letter writing.
The career planning process is a series of steps to help you clarify and determine your short- and long-term career goals.
- Explore your interests and abilities
- Research potential careers
- Decide on one or more career paths
- Create your future work success by designing action plans to help you achieve your goals
5-Step plan
Step 1: Conduct Assessments
Identify a career that aligns with your goals.
A critical piece of planning your career is identifying what motivates you. Do you know exactly what you want to do? If not, these assessments may help you narrow down your search to identify specific fields of interest.
Understanding yourself – What are your strengths and personality?
What motivates you? – What truly motivates you at work?

Step 2: Discover Careers

Step 3: Set Goals
Strategize your next steps.
Career goals will help you to focus more clearly on the possibilities available to you. Use the Goal Setting Worksheet to get yourself started.
- A career goal can be a specific job you want to do – such as Data Analyst or Lab Tech – or be a particular field you want to work in – such as nursing or finance.
- Rather than limiting your future, a career goal may help you discover career possibilities you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. There are often several job possibilities with any chosen career field.
Step 4: Create MyCareer Plan
Be realistic about expectations and timelines.
- Write down specific action steps to take to achieve your goals and help yourself stay organized.
- Check off the steps as you complete them, but feel free to amend your career action plan as needed. It’s okay if your goals and priorities change.
- Determine what you need to do to prepare for your chosen career. Do you need special training? If so, find out what schools offer the training you need.
- Look into what kind of experience you will need to be successful in your career. Consider an internship as a way to get work experience in the career field.
- Write your career plan. See our sample for inspiration.
