Business Titling Requests
The University recognizes the importance of maintaining relevant and consistent application of system job titles in its job structure. Effective and consistent system title alignment helps us create a common language for staff and leaders to talk about job roles identify potential opportunities for growth. It also acts as a basis for people external to the University to find and understand our job openings and makes it easier for them to identify opportunities that align with their skills and experience.
How Business Titles Differ from System Titles
Business titles provide an enhanced level of definition to a position’s assigned system job title. They can be used in email signatures, the Outlook active directory, communications, department websites, ID badges, job postings, and business cards.

Business Title Request Process
In instances where a business title may be warranted, the following process is enacted. Please note that the Business Title Request Process is not intended for situations where the job profile (job classification) may be inaccurate; the Job Profile Appeals Process should be followed if the job profile is in question.
Step 1: Staff member request
- Staff member raises the issue with their manager.
Step 2: Manager review
- If after reviewing the Titling Guidelines the manager believes the request meets the criteria, they submit a Business Title Request Form to their designee.
Step 3: Department review
- If the designee believes the business title request meets the Titling Guidelines criteria, they submit a Designee Business Title Request Form to Compensation.
Step 4: Compensation review
- If Compensation believes the business title request meets the Titling Guidelines criteria, the request will be approved. The manager shares the outcome with the staff member and the staff member’s record is updated with their new business title.
