Retiree Eligibility Information

Retirement eligibility service requirement is changing from 10 to 15 years effective 1/1/2021.

  • Retirees will receive the full University subsidy contribution at 15 years versus current pro-rated contributions based on years of service.* Employees can retire at a part-time status and receive the full-time contribution if they cumulatively meet the full-time equivalent service requirement
  • An employee approaching retirement who meets previous service requirements, during a transition period (1/1/2021-12/31/2023), will have the opportunity to secure benefits under the new model

* Service requirements may be met or enhanced with the consideration of previous UR employment or employment at another higher education facility. See form here.

* If you were hired before 1/1/1996 and have remained in a benefits eligible since then, you are eligible to retire age 55+

New eligibility requirements

  • Must have at least 15 years of benefits eligible service
  • 5 years of continuous benefits eligible service leading up to retirement
  • Age 60+*

Retirement program notice

The IRS prohibits the termination of employment by an individual with the intent to be rehired in order to access funds in the Retirement Program of the University or members of its controlled group. As of August 1, 2017, members of the controlled group of the University of Rochester include:

Highland Hospital, Highlands at Brighton, Highlands at Pittsford, Highlands Living Center, UR Medicine Home Care (VNS), Visiting Nurse Signature Care, High Tech Rochester, Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, Jones Memorial Hospital and FF Thompson Health Systems, Inc.
