There's never been a better time for
University of Rochester employees to
quit smoking!
Smokers' Health Project
One-on-one, intensive, in-person smoking cessation counseling is available from The Smokers' Health Project (SHP).
The Smokers' Health Project (SHP) is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and open to people 18 years of age and older who smoke at least five cigarettes per day. Other eligibility criteria apply.
GRATCC (pronounced GROT-see), the Greater Rochester Area Treatment Cessation Center, is based out of the SHP office and also offers intensive counseling.
Smokers who contact SHP are screened to see which of their programs, if any, would be most appropriate.

New York State Smokers Quitline
1-866-NY-QUITS
(1-866-697-8487)
Some smokers are more likely to quit with the structure and group support of Quitting Time, described above, but others may prefer to get one-on-one help via the telephone. If this sounds like you, or if Quitting Time doesn't conveniently fit into your schedule, try the New York State Smokers' Quitline.
The New York State Smokers’ Quitline offers:
- A free starter kit of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges for eligible NYS smokers;
- Trained Quitline Specialists offering help with quit plans;
- Information about local stop smoking programs;
- Informational taped messages.
